Final Fantasy IV Summons: Locations, Hidden Summon Unlocks, and Moves Final Fantasy IV Summons Guides: Locations, Hidden Summon Unlocks, and Moves

Although they have made an appearance in some forms in some of the previous FF titles, Final Fantasy IV is actually the first entry in the series to truly embrace the presence and concept of invocations โ€“ or as they are officially known in the FF4 universe, Eidolons .

There are a variety of FF4 Summon Monsters โ€“ some of them obtained naturally throughout the story progression โ€“ as Summons play a significant narrative role โ€“ and some of them optional, hidden in such a way that players will only find them by extreme luck or through calculated and complete grinding.

Of course, there are several versions of FF4; but this guide covers the 2D version of the game, which means it covers the summoning places e how to unlock hidden summons for that original version, not the 3D remake (although many details are duplicated). We've done our best to list the different names you can find in the different versions. Ultimately, this guide covers the versions of FF4 on the SNES, PS1, GBA, and PSP - plus the new Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster version.

FF4 Summons obtained during the story

These summons are all obtained over the course of the natural course of FF4's story. We've decided not to list exactly where each of the summons unlock to avoid spoilers - but we do list their MP costs and effects when called in battle.

You'll find many classics from the FF series here - some making their first appearance as Eidolons - summonable creatures, and in FF4 combat they can prove invaluable allies - especially in the more challenging, non-'EasyType' versions of the game released in the West. later.

Optional FF4 Summons and How to Get Them

There are a handful of summons in FF4 that are optional creatures that can be missed, and getting them is a bit of a pain in the ass as it depends on you getting a low drop rate and high rarity items from specific enemies. If you're a completeist, however, here's how to unlock the optional eidolons in FF4 2D, including the Pixel Remaster version:

    Imp / Goblin

    • The Imp, known in some versions as the Goblin, deals weak, non-elemental damage to a target.
    • 1 MP cost
    • Rydia learns this summon using the Imp item. This rarely drops from Goblin or Lil' Murderer enemies. You can find Goblins in most parts of the Overworld, Mist Cave, Antlion's Den or Land of Summons. The Lil' Killer can be found in the Lunar Underground.

    Pump

    • Performs a bomb attack against an enemy; is non-elemental damage, with its effectiveness determined by the user's current HP.
    • 10 MP cost
    • Learned from the Bomb (summon) item, which is a rare drop from 'Balloon' enemies, the purple bomb found in the Tower of Babil and various lunar locations.

    Mindflayer / Mage

    • The Mindflayer uses the Mind Blast ability, and deals decent non-elemental damage to an enemy, but also inflicts the Paralyze Status Effect on them.
    • 18 MP cost
    • Rydia learns this summon using the Mindflayer item, which is a rare item from Mindflayer enemies. They are found in Lodestone Cavern & Lunar Ruins.

    Basilisk

    • Another standard enemy that works as an optional summon, Cockatrice launches an instant kill attack with 100% accuracy on a single enemy. As long as the enemy isn't immune to Petrify (most bosses are, sorry), they're dead.
    • 15 MP cost
    • Rydia learns to summon Cockatrice from an item called... you guessed it, Cockatrice. Fallโ€ฆer, you guessed it, of defeated enemies, Cockatrice, albeit very rarely. He appears in certain areas of the overworld and on Mt. hobbies
